After Galbatorix's demise, Nasuada becomes the Queen of the Empire. Arya becomes Queen of the Elves after the death of her mother to Galbatorix's general Lord Barst during the battle. She also resumes her role as the courier for the newly rescued green dragon egg, which soon hatches for her. Arya then becomes a part of the new riders order, with her dragon hatchling, Fírnen.
With the threat of Galbatorix removed, Eragon and Saphira are able to remember the location of the hidden eggs, and they work together to find a suitable place to house the now numerous Eldunari from both Galbatorix's collection and the Vault of Souls and to accommodate a new order of Riders. During this process, Eragon solves the problem of binding all the races together, by reworking the magic of the land to include both the dwarves and the Urgals in the bond between riders and dragons, meaning that the dragon eggs now are able to hatch for an urgal or dwarf.
In the end, Eragon decides that there is no safe place to raise and train the dragons and their Riders in Alagaësia, although Haderac Desert's Du fells Nángoröth prove worthy. With the approval of all the leaders of the various races, he elects to transport all the Eldunarí and dragon eggs to a new location save two, one of which is sent to the dwarves, and the other to the Urgals. If neither egg happens to choose a Rider, they would swap places.
Soon after the decision is made, Eragon and Arya realize their true feelings for each other, and Eragon offers Arya the chance to accompany him down the river and away from Alagaësia, and to help train the new Riders. Arya, however, declines, because of her duty as the elves' queen to replace her deceased mother, Izlanzadí. With heavy hearts, Eragon and Saphira depart Alagaësia and sail east in search of new lands. The series ends with the envisioned scene mentioned in the previous books of two people getting on a boat, whom are Eragon and Arya, and sailing away while two dragon are flying overhead and a man on the beach, Roran, mourns at his loss. Arya then flies off with her dragon. At first, Eragon weeps for all that he is leaving behind, but in time, he comes to realize that he would have another chance at life in his new adventure to raise and train the next generation of Riders and their dragons. With that in mind, he looks forward to his new life, "a life with dragons and Riders".
Currently, it is five years after the defeat of Galbatorix, and both Eragon and Saphira have since returned with the eggs and Eldunarí, seeing as none hatched for the people of the eastern country and their lands could not provide the needed protection for the eggs and hatchlings. Since his return, eggs have hatched for both humans, elves, dwarves and urgals, and the empire of dragon riders has been rebuilt with the help of the Eldunarí. With all the apprentice dragon riders, Eragon, Arya, and Murtagh whom has also return to Alagaësia, decided to train them in the way of the original dragon riders.
But like the first time, not all the riders were determined to follow the duties of the dragon riders. Like before, there were others who wanted more power then they had. They joined together, and are planning out how to overthrow the riders as the previous king Galbatorix had. This band of rebels have made a home and palace for themselves among, inside, and underneath the mountains of Du Fells Nángoröth. Among their members are dwarves of Dûrgrimst Az Sweldn rak Anhûin, some of which are Dragon Riders and others not, a great number of the once-again populous Ra'zac and Lethrblaka, Urgals who bear grudges, and power-hungry elves and humans alike. Not all are dragon riders, but what every member of the rebel empire have in common is the want to take over Alagaësia. These rebels go by the name of Du Celöbra Reoneya, The Honor Reapers. Many and all have some grudge held against the current riders and the queen of Alagaësia, and some have even sworn blood-oaths to the rebel's cause and are sworn enemies to the current Empire.
Now, you can either join the riders in defending Alagaësia against injustice, or the rebels in slowing stripping Alagaësia of it's free rule.
